The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries.

ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor (home to ALMA), and the ESO Headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany.

At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory, and will host and operate the southern array of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the world's largest and most sensitive high energy gamma-ray observatory. ESO is a major partner in ALMA. On Cerro Armazones, ESO is building the 39-metre Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky" and whose operations will be fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory.

Within its Maintenance, Support and Engineering Department (MSE) at the La Silla Paranal Observatory, within the Directorate of Operations, ESO is advertising a local staff member position of:

BIM Expert

Santiago

Vacancy closed on 25/09/2024

Deadline 25/09/2024

The successful applicant will be part of the Support and Quality Assurance Group (SQA) within the MSE Department at the Paranal site of the La Silla Paranal Observatory. The MSE Department, with a workforce of 85 engineers and technicians, provides maintenance and technical support to the four 8m VLT telescopes, to the VLT Interferometer with its auxiliary telescopes, the VST and VISTA survey telescopes and to all instruments available for scientific observations.

The Support and Quality Assurance Group is comprised of 6 engineers and is responsible for various "back-office" type supporting functions to the technical and scientific operations at large, in particular: planning technical activities including the contracted maintenance services, asset management in general through a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and support to users, maintenance and reliability management, quality management and assurance on the site, outsourced contract management like the central (technical) warehouse (and the supply chain associated), support for documenting technical processes, etc.

As the Paranal Observatory prepares for future simultaneous operations of the VLT and ELT, the SQA group is supporting ESO's Integrated Operations Programme (IOP) in developing and implementing a process model designed to deliver high-performance science data through sustainable operational processes. Building Information Modelling (BIM) deployment is anticipated as a key element for supporting data-driven operations, seamlessly integrated into Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS). Additionally, BIM is expected to form the backbone of Digital Twin capabilities across various ESO infrastructures, from small-scale instruments to large-scale facilities like the ELT's Dome and Main Structure (DMS).

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will have the following main duties:

  • Apply BIM knowledge and skills to contribute to the development of one of the most important and cutting-edge observatories worldwide.
  • Provide essential knowledge and expertise to comprehensively manage and integrate data for progressively building a landscape of three-dimensional models within Paranal.
  • Collaborate with a diverse core team of IOP architects, engineers, scientists, and operations experts to drive the transition towards leveraging digital-built infrastructure and instrumentation ecosystems in the Observatory.
  • Participate in a team-based working environment, under the leadership of project managers, to systematically deploy a BIM Management Plan for various projects with focus on future sustainable and lean operations.
  • Explore how virtual reality, augmented reality, programming languages and large language models could seamlessly merge into BIM-based operations.
