The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries.

ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor (home to ALMA), and the ESO Headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany.

At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory, and will host and operate the southern array of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the world's largest and most sensitive high energy gamma-ray observatory. ESO is a major partner in ALMA and on Cerro Armazones, ESO is building the 39-metre Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky" and whose operations will be fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory.

 

Due to the need for additional resources associated with the ELT programme, for its Logistic Department, within the Directorate Administration, at its Vitacura office in Santiago, Chile, ESO is advertising a local staff position of

Logistic Assistant

Santiago

The successful candidate will become part of the Logistic Group in Santiago (Chile) and will be responsible for the import and exports of goods and services. He/she will work in close collaboration with the users in particular with the ELT department to identify and implement the most efficient logistics solutions in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Organisation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The candidate will carry out several administrative tasks before the corresponding entities, such as preparation of import and export documentation, liberation forms for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, documentation for the Custom Broker, planning of arrivals with the freight forwarders, ports, airports, handling companies, etc.
  • Preparation of customs clearance documentation for ESO shipments considering ESO status
  • Coordination with transport and freight forwarder companies for ESO deliveries
  • Review and finetuning with users of their requests for transportation services.
  • Interact and support internal clients at ESO, in particular to the construction team in charge of the Extreme Large Telescope (ELT)

Key Competences and Experience:

Essential Competences

  • At least 3 years of working and technical experience with a proven track record of running imports, export and all other Customs operations besides handling general international trade
  • Service-oriented and problem solver
  • Ability to multitask and flexible approach to learning new tasks
  • Good time management to prioritize work and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a very organised and accurate manner
  • Good knowledge of MS word and MS Excel and
  • Good judgment to know when the next higher level needs to be informed.

Desirable Competences

  • Knowledge of regulations for Customs tax free operations, rules and regulations for International Organizations and transport is desirable.

Qualifications:

Technical degree with specialization in logistics, Customs and/or International Trade

Language skills:

The position requires a working knowledge of English and Spanish (written as well as spoken)

ESO aims to support members of personnel in maintaining a good work-life balance The initial contract is for a period of two years with the possibility of an indefinite extension, subject to evaluation. The title or grade may be subject to change according to qualification and the number of years of experience.

Duty Station:

The position will be based in the ESO Vitacura premises located in Santiago. The working schedule is Monday to Friday. Occasional travel to the sites of ESO observatories may be required.
