The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries.
ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor (home to ALMA and APEX), and the ESO Headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany.
At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory, and will host and operate the southern array of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the world's largest and most sensitive high energy gamma-ray observatory. ESO is a major partner in ALMA, the largest astronomical project in existence. And on Cerro Armazones, ESO is building the 39-metre Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky" and whose operations will be fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory.

The Sustainability and Diversity Officer provides leadership and support in planning and executing, sustainability actions inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on environmental and social aspects, including diversity and inclusion. In this task, the SDO receives advice and support from the Environment Committee and the Diversity & Inclusion Committee. The SDO is responsible for the development of a sustainability strategy, their implementation and monitoring.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Tasks related to sustainability and diversity strategy definition and implementation:
- In line with ESO's Vision and based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG), the SDO should develop a sustainability strategy, taking into account the current activities performed in this area.
- As a result, different sustainability programs will be executed throughout the organisation. Some of these activities will be led by the SDO, in others the SDO will only coordinate them.
- Support the implementation of updates of policies and procedures leading to a sustainable operation of ESO.
- Assess projects and activities from the sustainability viewpoint.
- The SDO should also develop new sustainability initiatives where appropriate.
- The SDO will set up a comprehensive set of sustainability objectives and define indicators for the programs and initiatives. The SDO will monitor these according to the parameters defined.
- The SDO will work, when needed, with external consultants for certain sustainability objectives.
- The SDO will make use of the advice and support from the Environment Committee and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee to develop the strategy and the programs/ initiatives.
Tasks related to sustainability and diversity engagement and promotion:
- Establish a sustainability and diversity culture at ESO, through internal outreach activities.
- Train staff on sustainability and diversity aspects.
- Create a sustainability and diversity report for ESO, which should be published every 3 years and contain the strategy, goals and performance of the Organisation.

Key Competences and Experience:
- Profound knowledge of sustainability aspects, in line with the UN SDG and CSR.
- Experience in project management, business planning and strategy.
- Enthusiasm for shaping sustainability strategy and for working on a wide range of tasks and issues in this context.
- Strong analytical skills, affinity for numbers and technology.
- Hands-on mentality and passion for implementing cross-functional projects.
- Have experience working in a multicultural and diverse context.
- Excellent communication skills (in English, both written and oral forms) are required, also in order to foster worldwide networking and collaborations, and be able to deliver clear and relevant presentations in international meetings.
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to the new challenges of the evolving environment, to take on responsibilities and initiative.
Qualifications:
University degree in engineering, energy or environmental sciences, business administration or a similar field.
Language skills:
The position requires a working knowledge of English.
