The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries. ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in the Atacama Desert region of Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnator. The ESO headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany.

At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory. ESO is a major partner in ALMA, the largest astronomical project in existence. And on Cerro Armazones, ESO is building the 39-metre European Extremely Large Telescope, which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky" and whose operations will be fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory.

For its Department of Communication in Santiago, ESO is inviting students from Chilean Universities, to participate in the following programme:

Summer Internship in Communications

Santiago

Vacancy closed on 17/12/2021

Deadline 17/12/2021

ESO's Department of Communication (COMM) comprises more than 20 staff with a range of complementary expertise ranging from astronomy, writing, image processing, video production, publishing, web production and design to event organisation. It is responsible for all aspects of internal and external communication for the Organisation, including Social Media (SM). At ESO's SM channels, we provide information about ESO's activities, with the mission of increasing the awareness of ESO, astronomy and the impact of the Organisation on society at large. Currently, COMM is executing a new SM strategy which aims to create an engaged and dedicated community.

ESO local Social Media channels are: Facebook: @ESO.Chile / Twitter: @ESO Chile

Project:

Promote ESO's VEV program and National Astronomy Day activities among the Chilean audience through local ESO SM channels.

During Q1 2022, two critical activities for COMM Chile will take place, which will need dedicated SM campaigns: the relaunch of the Virtual Educational Visits (VEV) and the National Day of Astronomy. Thus, the summer intern would oversee producing and executing -with support of the team- a specific SM strategy and its related content production for these activities on the local SM channels.

The selected student will design specific SM campaigns targeted to the audiences of these events (teachers, high school students, families, adults interested in astronomy, among others); provide timely delivered and attractive content in Spanish; engage with ESO's audiences through local SM channels in a proper yet compelling language; attend COMM Team meetings and coordinate content production and strategy execution with the team.

Requirements:

Candidates currently studying a University degree in science, communications and audio-visual careers are eligible.

Knowledge and skills to manage social media accounts is highly desirable.

The candidate should have interest in communicating astronomy and other physical sciences to the public. Must be fluent in English and Spanish both written and oral, have strong MS Office applications skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and be familiarized or willing to learn how to create content in Canva.

We offer

ESO offers a special allowance during the period you are performing your internship with us. During summer 2022, it is expected that the project will be performed remotely, with a possibility to visit the Vitacura offices, depending on the nature of the project and the COVID restrictions applying at ESO at the time of the internship.

Application

We invite students from Chilean Universities in an advanced stage of their career to apply. The apprenticeship should be supported by the University and therefore covered by the accident insurance (Law 16.744).

If you are interested in working in areas of frontline technology and in a stimulating international environment, you are invited to apply online at http://recruitment.eso.org/.

Applications must be completed in English and should include a motivational letter indicating the project(s) you are interested to apply to, and CV.

Closing date for applications is 17 December 2021.

The post is equally open to suitably qualified candidates irrespective of nationality, gender, age, disability, ethnicity, or religion.
