The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory. ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor (home to ALMA and APEX), and the ESO Headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany.
At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory, and will host and operate the southern array of the Cherenkov Telescope Array, the world's largest and most sensitive high energy gamma-ray observatory. ESO is a major partner in ALMA, the largest astronomical project in existence. And on Cerro Armazones, ESO is building the 39-metre Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky" and whose operations will be fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with a team of international, friendly and motivated professionals in the Electrical Telescope and Instrumentation Engineering Group within the Electronic Engineering Department. ESO's Electronic Engineering Department comprises 31 Electronics/Electrical engineers and technicians, who are responsible for the definition, design or follow-up, manufacturing and implementation of electronics systems for optical and infrared astronomical instruments and telescope systems. The Department is part of the Directorate of Engineering and is based at the ESO Headquarters in Garching near Munich, Germany.
We are looking for a highly motivated electronic engineer who will be responsible for development, integration, and verification of astronomical instruments and/or telescope subsystems from the first concepts, to the final product delivered to and tested at the observatory. The successful candidate will be interested not only in new technical responsibilities but also in developing their interpersonal skills within an international environment.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Electrotechnical contract follow up of instruments and/ or telescope subsystems including the review and evaluation of the electronics systems delivered by consortia making sure that they are in line with ESO's specifications;
- Ensure that the selected technologies are compliant with the system requirements and complete including documentation;
- Follow-up the electronic parts of complex systems built by instrument consortia or industrial partners;
- Review of technical documentation;
- Resolve electronics and electrical related matters within the multidisciplinary project teams;
- Design, implement, commission, test and document real-time based electronic systems for telescopes and scientific instruments.
Reports to:
Head of the Electrical Telescope and Instrumentation Group in the Electronic Engineering Department within the Directorate of Engineering.
Key Competences and Experience:
Essential Competences and Experience
- A minimum of five years of experience in the area of industrial automation and/or scientific instrumentation;
- Experience in leading projects in electronic systems design, integration, and testing;
- Very good communication skills in English and the ability to write high quality documentation;
- Hands-on experience in digital and analogue circuit design;
- Experience in Motion Control with different solutions, e.g. Piezos, BDC, DC and STP;
- Experience with PLC technologies;
- Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills, in particular in contributing to international teams;
- Ability monitoring own work and communicate with project managers in an active and open way;
- Desire to learn new things and able to understand complex operational environments.
Desirable Competences and Experience
- Experience with EMC, Safety for Machinery and EU Norms;
- Hands-on experience with E-PLAN and Altium CAD Solutions;
- Knowledge of VHDL/FPGA programming within Quartus or Vivago;
- Knowledge of high-level programming languages, such as C/C++ or Python;
- Experience with EtherCAT based control systems.
Qualifications:
University degree in electronic engineering or equivalent educational level.
Language skills:
Excellent command of the English language.

The contract is for a fixed term duration of three years, and is subject to successful completion of the probation period.
