The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), an international astronomy facility, is a partnership of the European Organization for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS) of Japan in cooperation with the Republic of Chile. ALMA is funded by ESO on behalf of its Member States, by NSF in cooperation with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the National Science Council of Taiwan (NSC) and by NINS in cooperation with the Academia Sinica (AS) in Taiwan and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). ALMA construction and operations are led by ESO on behalf of its Member States; by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), managed by Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI), on behalf of North America; and by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) on behalf of East Asia. The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) provides the unified leadership and management of the construction, commissioning and operation of ALMA.

Array Performance Group Manager (DSO)

The Array Performance Group (APG) at the Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) is responsible for commissioning new observing capabilities, online software testing, initiation of various improvements to the ALMA system, troubleshooting issues with the ALMA Array. With other Groups, APG provides JAO Technical Leads to ALMA Development Programmes.
The Group is composed of the Group Manager and System Astronomers who are the technical experts that work on corrective action and advance the performance of the Observatory at the system level. The Group Manager will report to the Head of the Department of Science Operations (DSO). Principle interfaces include the Operations Performance Group Manager, Engineering Services Manager, Software Release Manager, and the Program Management and Data Management Group Managers. Other interactions include the Observatory Scientist, Observatory System Engineer, ALMA Regional Centre staff, and science operations specialists.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Acquisition and processing of ALMA test data
- Trend analysis of the array performance
- Software validation testing of the on-line system
- Commission new ALMA capabilities and assist in the optimization of existing capabilities
- Troubleshoot system level problems
- Provide JAO Technical Leads to ALMA Development Programs
The APG Manager will have a fraction of time reserved for scientific research, which will be subject to each Executive's contractual conditions.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants shall fulfill the following requirements:
- PhD in Astronomy, Physics or a related field with at least 5 years of experience post-PhD
- Demonstrated expertise in (sub)millimeter interferometer observations and calibration of (sub)millimeter interferometric data
- Ability to lead a team of system astronomers, including coordination of the main Group responsibilities and representation of APG in the Department of Science Operations Management Team
- Proven track record in scientific research
- Fluent in written and spoken English

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, including ALMA staff worldwide.
- Self-organized, proactive, flexible and autonomous person.
- Ability to anticipate and cope with critical situations and under work pressure.
- Leadership skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- The position is based at the Santiago Central Office, Chile, with visits to the Operations Support Facility (OSF) near San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
- Physical health compatible with high altitude conditions. A successful High Altitude Medical Exam is a necessary condition of employment.
- Willingness to travel overseas for both short and extended periods for meetings, training, etc. will be required
