The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries.

ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor (home to ALMA and APEX), and the ESO Headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany.

At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory. ESO is a major partner in ALMA, the largest astronomical project in existence. And on Cerro Armazones, ESO is building the 39-metre European Extremely Large Telescope, which will become ''the world's biggest eye on the sky'' and whose operations will be fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory.

Internship for database design and implementation

Paranal

Vacancy closed on 09/05/2016

Deadline 09/05/2016

For the Software Group of its Maintenance Support and Engineering (MSE) Department at the La Silla Paranal Observatory (LPO), ESO is offering

Internship for database design and implementation

The MSE Department of the Paranal Observatory ensures technical availability of the four VLT 8m telescopes, the 2 survey telescopes (VST and VISTA), the VLT interferometer with its auxiliary telescopes, 18 complex instruments for scientific observations and common facilities.

Objective:

The objective of this internship, is to design and prototype a data mart architecture, which can be used by the Paranal MSE Department, to help diagnose problems affecting Paranal telescopes and their instruments. This data mart needs to be designed to consolidate data from several data sources such as: logs, problem report tickets, fits images, real time data, or data coming from other monitoring tools, work orders, and purchasing (i.e.: spares). The DB design must be optimized to allow MSE members to perform custom queries, plots, statistics, as well as to implementing cross correlation of data currently stored in different databases, and conducting multidimensional analysis while minimizing user response time and optimizing hardware usage (memory, disk, CPU, network traffic).

Requirements:

The applicants should be students of Software or Information Technology in her/his last university year (ideally looking for a thesis project), with proficiency in database design and administration.

Competences: You should be able to:

  • Work both on your own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Build good collaborative working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and disciplines.
  • Provide clear, concise and timely written and oral communications.
  • Work in an organized manner and deliver to agreed deadlines and standards.

Internship details:

The duration of the internship is preferably for 6 months (possibility of 3 months only) with a working schedule of 5x2 (Monday to Friday) from the ESO offices in Vitacura. Occasional trips to the Paranal Observatory will be organized.

Application:

Applicants are invited to apply online at https://recruitment.eso.org/. Applications must be completed ideally in English and should include a motivation letter and CV.

Closing date for applications is April 21 The post is equally open to suitably qualified female and male applicants.
