The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory. ESO carries out an ambitious programme focused on the design, construction and operation of powerful ground-based observing facilities enabling astronomers to make important scientific discoveries.

 

ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in northern Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor (home to ALMA and APEX), and the ESO Headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany.

 

At Paranal, ESO operates the Very Large Telescope, the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory. ESO is a major partner in ALMA, the largest astronomical project in existence. And on Cerro Armazones, ESO is building the 39-metre European Extremely Large Telescope, which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky" and whose operations will be fully integrated into the Paranal Observatory.

This is an excellent opportunity for early career professionals to further build on initial experience and to embark on a new challenge.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supporting timely preparation of periodic closings and Financial Statements;
  • Responsible for all accounting aspects of our consolidated entities;
  • Responsible for accounts receivable including claims recovery process;
  • Act as the contact person for internal and external auditors for the above matters;
  • Act as back-up for the organisation's treasurer.

Reports to:

The Accountant is part of the Accounting team within the Finance Department and reports to the Head of Finance.

Experience:

  • Excellent knowledge in periodic closing activities including setting up Financial Statements;
  • Proficiency in IFRS and/or IPSAS standards;
  • Familiarity with an ERP system, preferably MS Dynamics (Navision);
  • Skilled in MS Office applications, in particular Excel;
  • Hands-on working style and willing to perform tasks with strong organisational skills.

Key Competences:

Excellent communication skills, a good command of the English language and a strong sense of team spirit are essential. A well-structured working style, able to deal with details while keeping a focus on the global picture as well the flexibility to adapt to changing environment or requirements are expected.

Qualifications:

Certified Accountant, University Degree in Accounting or equivalent.

Language Skills:

The position requires a working knowledge of English.

Remuneration and Contract:

We offer an attractive remuneration package including a competitive salary, comprehensive pension scheme and medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support in relocating family members and the possibility to place child/children in daycare.

The contract is for a fixed-term duration of three years, and is subject to successful completion of the probation period. The contract will therefore cease after three years.

An extension is possible only under certain conditions and in accordance with the applicable policies and staff rules and regulations.

Duty Station:

Garching near Munich, Germany with occasional duty trips to ESO sites in Chile.
