The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. ESO operates three unique world-class observing sites in the Atacama Desert region of Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnator. The ESO headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany. ESO is the focal point for Europe's participation in the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) consortium, which is currently operating a large submillimetre array in the Chilean Andes. ESO is planning a 39-metre-class European Extremely Large optical/near-infrared Telescope, the E-ELT, which will become "the world's biggest eye on the sky".

Software Engineer

The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and support of the software applications on the distributed computer architecture that controls the different systems.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and support of the software applications.
  • Troubleshooting and following up operational problems.
  • Actively participate during the commissioning (testing) of new systems and design, develop and deploy new applications.
  • Participate in general group activities and will perform other tasks as assigned.
  • Maintaining reliable configuration management of the software systems and applications.

His/her main duties will be:

The successful candidate will be part of the Software Group under supervision of Software Group Leader within

the Maintenance, Support and Engineering Department of the Paranal Observatory.

Experience:

You should have at least three years of experience in C/C++ programming and UNIX/Linux environment and experience in working in large distributed real-time control systems with demonstrated ability to diagnose problems. Knowledge of VxWorks/VMEbus is desirable.

Knowledge in Siemens PLC/Safety PLC (S5/S7) and Beckhoff soft PLC would be an asset.

  • Is flexible and adapts quickly to new ways of working or new responsibilities.
  • The ability to work in a team of engineers and astronomers, maintaining and improving complex equipments and systems.

Qualifications

You must have university degree in software or electronics engineering, computer sciences or equivalent.

Language Skills:

The position requires a good proficiency/expert level in English both written and oral.

Duty Station:

Paranal Observatory. Working schedule will be 8 days on duty and 6 days off duty (8x6).

Remuneration and Contract:
